The sizes and prices for hardcover/softcover books are inconsistent throughout the site. Using the Lulu editor, you can create a 8.5x8.5" hardcover book, but if you upload a PDF that size is not an option.
Is there any definitive list of available sizes for softcover & hardcover books along with their prices, to be used with the API?
On the website, there are some differences in what types of books can be created depending on whether you are creating a photobook using the Lulu Studio tool or are creating a standard book via upload of your interior files.
Via the API, you can create books of any combination that is represented in either tool. So you can create an 8.5"x8.5" hardcover book via the API, but it is single specific combination of properties:
This help page is supposed to be the reference of possible package combinations along with the supported page ranges, but it looks like it is missing some of the options that are available via the Lulu Studio. I'll try to figure out what's missing or if there is a better place to look.
This help page shows the base and per page pricing for the various types of books, but again, it seems to be missing some of those same options.
Thanks for the response, Josiah. Could you please describe the difference between a standard book and a photo book, as well as how to differentiate those within the API?
Generally speaking, a photobook uses a heavier higher quality paper (in the API, "premium" paper) suitable for high quality images and only supports color printing. These are the books created by the Lulu Studio tool. A standard book uses a thinner paper and allows for less expensive black and white printing, if appropriate.
As far as the API is concerned, there is no distinction between standard book and photo book aside from the physical_attributes passed in. If you are looking to create a book with color images on a thicker photo quality paper, then you want the "premium" paper. Otherwise, the "regular" paper is appropriate.
